Badminton Weekend for SG Düsseldorf-Unterrath: Highs and Lows from Verbandsliga to Hobby League
September 20, 2026
What an eventful badminton weekend for SG Düsseldorf-Unterrath! On matchday 2 of the 2026/27 season, the senior teams from Verbandsliga down to Hobby League experienced both light and shadow.
One particular challenge had to be dealt with before the first serve: exceptional player Heidi Bender was absent this weekend, as she is competing at the European Senior Championships 2026 in Cagliari, Italy, chasing medals for Germany.
The first three teams were in winning form, while the fourth and fifth teams had to concede.
Here is the complete overview of all matches from the weekend:
1st Team: Close home win in Verbandsliga thriller: SGU's first team hosted FC Langenfeld 1 in Verbandsliga Süd 1. In a highlyClass and extremely exciting match, Unterrath ultimately prevailed narrowly but deservedly 5-3. With this second season win, the first team solidifies its place in the top group of the Verbandsliga.
2nd Team: Derby gala at OSC Düsseldorf: Following the stunning start, the 2nd team immediately followed up with another statement in Bezirksliga Süd 1. An 8-0 rout.
3rd Team: Commanding win in rescheduled away match: Despite a match rescheduling, the 3rd team in Bezirksklasse Süd 1 was not thrown off rhythm. Playing away at BC Düsseldorf 3, SGU's players delivered a dominant performance and secured an untroubled 7-1 away victory – a season start on point!
4th & 5th Teams: Less fortunate were the teams from the lower leagues this weekend:
4th Team (Kreisklasse): In Saturday evening's home match against BC SW Düsseldorf 2, the team struggled to find their rhythm and ultimately had to concede a 2-6 defeat.
5th Team (Hobby League): The Fifth travelled to TV Jahn Kapellen 1 for an away match on Saturday and fought bravely. In the end it was not quite enough and the points stayed in Kapellen after a 2-4 defeat.
Conclusion: With three emphatic wins at the top and two instructive defeats in the lower leagues, it was an emotional weekend for SGU. The direction for the top teams is absolutely right: eyes are on the prize – and fingers are crossed for Heidi Bender in Italy! 🍀
