SG Düsseldorf-Unterrath's first team celebrated a successful start to the new Verbandsliga season. For the third year in a row, the season opener saw them face WMTV Solingen – a matchup on equal terms in both the Verbandsliga and Oberliga.
While the matches in previous years remained razor-close until the very end, this time a standout newcomer and a top singles performance by Maike secured a commanding 6:2 overall victory.
The match began simultaneously with the women's doubles and the second men's doubles. While Lukas Beermann and Martin Enneking in the second men's doubles recovered from a close first set to decisively defeat Kirschbaum/Schimanski 21:18 and 21:15, the women's doubles turned into a real thriller. Maike Pällmann and Akane Nikawadori delivered a strong performance but narrowly lost to Tischner/Dochtermann 19:21 and 20:22.
At 1:1, it was time for the first men's doubles. Here, newcomer Shinan Han made an immediate impact alongside Dennis Klein-Helmkamp. That the two were far from randomly paired was evident from the first second on court: both bring over 10 years of shared experience and victories in the Oberliga and Regionalliga. The perfectly in-sync duo gave Dochtermann/Middendorf no chance whatsoever, winning 21:10 and 21:17 and putting SGU back in the lead.
The singles continued in typically competitive fashion. Shinan Han underlined his excellent form in the first men's singles with a dominant 21:8 and 21:18 victory over Tim Dochtermann. In addition, Lukas Beermann showed great resilience in the second men's singles after losing the first set, fighting back to secure an important three-set win (11:21, 21:14, 21:18). Martin Enneking also battled hard in the third men's singles against Felix Kirschbaum, but had to accept a heartbreakingly narrow three-set defeat (21:18, 17:21, 19:21).
The women's singles and mixed doubles ultimately sealed the deal. Maike Pällmann swept her opponent Christina Dochtermann off the court in the women's singles with a dominant 21:8 and 21:14 victory.
The remaining point was contributed by the mixed doubles pair Daniel Dercks and Akane Nikawadori: after a close first set, the two showed iron nerves in the extension of the second game and turned the match in the third set for a 19:21, 22:20 and 21:15 victory.
With this well-deserved 6:2 victory, SG Unterrath sent a clear message right on the first matchday and looks ahead with confidence to the challenges ahead in the Verbandsliga.
